The Sunflower Lounge keeps Birmingham's grassroots gig scene glowing

Every music city needs a small, scruffy, much-loved room where bands cut their teeth, and for many Brummies that room is the Sunflower Lounge. Tucked away at 76 Smallbrook Queensway, a short walk from New Street station, this independent bar and venue has been going strong since the late 1990s.
Time Out sums up its look as "junk-shop chic borrowed from the last fifty years of bohemia and counter-culture". Think scuffed floorboards, red leather sofas, black and turquoise floral wallpaper and posters of Elvis Presley and La Dolce Vita on the walls. Upstairs, the sound system leans towards soul classics and alternative rock from the 1980s and 1990s.
The real action happens downstairs. The box-shaped gig room, with its red and black walls, has been described by Time Out as a "veritable feedback chamber", and it is exactly the kind of space where you can stand a few feet from a band on the way up. Songkick lists its capacity at 120.
That intimacy has made the Sunflower Lounge a launchpad. Local unsigned bands have long played here, and it is popular with up-and-coming acts on their early tours. Brummie favourites JAWS and Peace are among the acts it helped support before they went on to wider acclaim.
A range of promoters book shows, which keeps the calendar varied. Recent and upcoming gigs include Saint Clair with support from jo from school on 16 October 2026, Grace Gachot on 21 October and The Rabbitts on 25 November.
There is something reassuring about a venue like this. Big arenas have their place, but it is rooms like the Sunflower Lounge that keep a city's music scene healthy, giving young musicians somewhere to learn their craft and giving audiences the thrill of discovering a band first.
If you have never been, pick a gig, head down the stairs and be ready for it to be loud. Time Out advises earplugs for anyone easily put off by noise, but that is all part of the charm.
