On the last Saturday of every month, Moseley Village fills with the smell of fresh bread, the chatter of neighbours and the sight of stalls lined along Alcester Road and the village green. Moseley Farmers' Market has been part of village life for more than 25 years, and it remains one of the most cherished dates in the south Birmingham calendar.

It all began in August 2000, when David Isgrove, at the suggestion of his wife, launched the market with 12 stalls at the Moseley Festival. The idea was to boost the local community and economy. Today the market welcomes up to 60 independent stalls, packed tightly into the heart of the village.

The rules are what make it special. Moseley is an accredited Real Farmers' Market with the Farm Retail Association, which means traders grow, bake, brew or make what they sell. Shoppers will find seasonal fruit and vegetables, artisan bread, cakes, cheeses, meat, preserves and handmade goods, with stallholders happy to explain how their produce is made. Regulars include Lightwood Cheeses and Woodhouse Sloe Gin, whose makers travel from Loughborough.

The market is community-run by volunteers and is organised as a Community Interest Company. Surplus funds go back into the area, supporting causes such as Moseley in Bloom, Moseley in Lights and the Christmas Day Together scheme.

It has a shelf of awards to show for its efforts too. The market describes itself as a four-time winner of Best UK Farmers' Market, and it has won praise from well-known supporters including comedian Joe Lycett, food broadcaster Nigel Barden and former West Midlands mayor Sir Andy Street.

It also works alongside the farmers' markets in Kings Heath and Kings Norton, which share many of the same traders, helping keep small producers in business across the south of the city.

With the next market falling on Saturday 31 October 2026, it is the perfect excuse for an autumn wander, a bag of seasonal veg and a catch-up with friends. The new Moseley railway station is only a short walk away.

Dates, trader information and volunteering opportunities are on the Moseley Farmers' Market website.
